Get a Non-Driver ID
Please Note:

Your documents must

Be original or certified. We cannot accept photocopies, damaged or illegible documents.

Have the same first and last name (If your name changed, bring an original or certified copy of your marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court issued name change. Documents must be issued in the U.S.)

At least one document must have your full middle name (if applicable).

Be printed off if your proof of residency was sent to you electronically.

We cannot accept any photo document where you are not clearly recognizable.

Bring your glasses or contact lenses (if needed) to pass your vision test for license renewal or original permit.

Your proofs of residence must show your current address (cannot be a P.O. Box).

DMV cannot accept two proofs from the same financial institution (bank statement, credit card statement, ATM card, credit card or cancelled check).

REAL ID is a new Federally-compliant document that allows you to board an airplane within the U.S. and enter Federal buildings. Additional information about REAL ID is available on the DMV website.

What is an Enhanced Document? If your license is Enhanced, it will say ENHANCED. An Enhanced license allows you to cross the land border from Canada or Mexico or by sea from some countries in the Caribbean. Additional information is available on the DMV website.

You are not eligible for REAL ID. You will receive a non-driver id that is not a federally secure document.
Bring the following documents with you to a DMV office:
U.S. Birth Certificate

Must be original or certified.

Must be issued by a state or local government.

Must show full middle name if applicable.
Parent or guardian will also come to DMV

Parent must bring New York State license or ID with the same address as applicant.
Pay Stub

Must show name and current NY State address.

Must be issued within 120 days of your DMV office visit.

Electronic versions must be printed.
Out of State License

Must be current or not expired for more than 2 years.

Complete the Application for Permit, Driver license or Non-Driver ID Card (pdf) (MV-44).

Bring money for fees $6.50-$13.00.
